Ewen has responsibility for assessing the impact of GM crops relevant to Irish agriculture and for researching the wheat-STB interaction, with the goal of identifying novel strategies for the control of wheat STB disease. He is also focussed on the development and/or application of novel technologies to elucidate gene function in major crop species of which one involves using non-Agrobacterium bacteria for efficient gene transfer (Patent WO2011076933). His research work primarily encompasses wheat, barley and potato.
