Fiona is the head of the UCD Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions team, the senior lecturer in Plant Pathology and a Principal Investigator in the UCD Earth Institute. Her primary research area is plant disease control. The main goals of her research programme are to (i) better understand plant-pathogen interactions and thus improve plant resistance to diseases, (ii) develop new technologies for plant genetic engineering, and (iii) exploit plant pathogens as a means to improve the productivity of second-generation biofuels. Currently, she has linkages with industry, academia and agencies in Ireland and abroad (e.g. Limagrain, JIC, DAFM, USDA). She is a joint holder of a patent for a novel method of generating GM plants (WO2011076933).
